Laser Hair Removal: Myths vs Facts

Laser Hair Removal: Myths vs Facts

Laser hair removal is one of the most requested treatments, and also one of the most misunderstood. Here’s what’s actually true, separated from what’s just been repeated online enough times to sound true.

Myth: One Session Is Enough

Fact: Hair grows in cycles, and laser only effectively targets follicles in their active growth phase. At any given time, only a portion of your hair is in that phase, which is why a full course spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is needed to catch hair across its complete growth cycle. A single session will reduce some hair, but it’s not the full result.

Myth: It’s Not Safe for Darker Skin Tones

Fact: This was a real limitation of older laser technology, which struggled to distinguish between melanin in the hair follicle and melanin in the surrounding skin. Medical-grade lasers used today are calibrated per skin tone and hair type during consultation specifically to address this, making the treatment safe and effective across a much wider range of skin tones than it used to be.

Myth: The Results Are Permanent

Fact: Laser hair removal provides long-term reduction rather than permanent removal. Most clients see hair growth reduce progressively with each session, and many need only occasional maintenance sessions after completing a full course, but “permanent” isn’t quite accurate.

Myth: It’s More Painful Than Waxing

Fact: Most clients describe a warm, snapping sensation rather than significant pain, especially with modern cooling technology built into the equipment. It’s generally well tolerated, and sessions for most areas take just minutes.

If you’ve been putting off laser hair removal because of something you read online, it’s worth checking the facts against your actual skin and goals during a consultation rather than ruling it out based on outdated information.
