Post-Treatment Skincare: Do’s and Don’ts

Post-Treatment Skincare: Do’s and Don’ts

What you do in the days after a treatment has a real effect on how your results turn out, sometimes as much as the treatment itself. Here’s a general guide, though your practitioner’s specific instructions for your treatment always take priority.

The First 24 Hours

Skin is at its most reactive right after most in-clinic treatments. This is the window where sun exposure, heat, and active ingredients can do the most damage, and where the least intervention is usually the best approach. Let your skin settle before introducing anything new.

The Do’s

  • Wear SPF daily, even indoors, especially after any treatment involving lasers, peels, or micro-needling.
  • Keep your routine simple: a gentle cleanser and a basic moisturiser for the first few days.
  • Stay hydrated, since well-hydrated skin heals more efficiently.
  • Follow the specific timeline your practitioner gives you before resuming your normal products.

The Don’ts

  • Avoid exfoliating acids, retinoids, or other active ingredients until your skin has fully settled.
  • Skip heavy makeup for at least the first day if your practitioner recommends it, freshly treated skin is more prone to irritation.
  • Don’t pick at any flaking or peeling, let it resolve on its own.
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and intense exercise for the first day or two after anything involving heat or micro-injury.

When to Call Your Practitioner

Mild redness, tightness, or sensitivity is normal for most treatments. Anything beyond what you were told to expect, like significant swelling, pain, or a reaction that seems to be getting worse rather than better, is worth a call rather than waiting it out.

Every treatment comes with its own specific aftercare, which is always covered during your consultation and again after your session.
